When this treatment is usually needed

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth being examined. None of them is a diagnosis on its own — several different problems can produce the same symptom.

  • A tooth lost to decay, fracture or gum disease
  • An existing bridge or denture you would rather replace
  • Difficulty chewing on one side
  • Neighbouring teeth beginning to drift into the gap
  • You want to avoid cutting down healthy adjacent teeth

How we do it here

The specifics that shape your visit, rather than a generic description of the procedure.

  • Bone and gum assessment before we recommend anything
  • Neighbouring healthy teeth left completely untouched
  • Single tooth, multiple teeth or full-arch planning
  • Staged timeline mapped out for you at the first visit

How the visit usually goes

Every step is explained before it happens, so nothing arrives as a surprise.

  1. 1
    Assessment

We check bone volume and gum health, and review your general medical history, before recommending anything.

  2. 2
    Planning

The staged timeline, including the healing phase, is mapped out for you at the first visit.

  3. 3
    Placement

The implant is placed under local anaesthesia.

  4. 4
    Healing

The implant integrates with the bone over roughly three to six months.

  5. 5
    The crown

Once integrated, the crown is made and fitted onto the implant.

This page describes a dental procedure in general terms. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan, and outcomes vary from person to person. What is right for you is decided after a clinical examination at the clinic. See our terms and medical disclaimer.

After your treatment

General aftercare. The instructions you are given at the clinic, for your own mouth, come first.

  • Some swelling and discomfort for a few days after placement is normal. A cold pack on the cheek, on and off, helps on the first day.
  • Follow the soft-food and rinsing instructions you are given, and do not chew on the implant site until you are told it is ready.
  • Do not smoke while the implant heals. Smoking significantly increases the risk of an implant failing to settle into the bone.
  • Keep the area clean exactly as shown at the clinic, even while it is tender.
  • Once the crown is fitted, clean around the implant as carefully as a natural tooth, and keep your review appointments.

Questions we are actually asked

How long does the whole process take?

The assessment is about an hour. After placement there is a healing phase of roughly three to six months before the crown is fitted, because the implant needs to integrate with the bone.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

They suit different situations. The main practical difference is that an implant does not require cutting down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, which a conventional bridge does. Which is right for you depends on the bone, the gums and the neighbouring teeth.

Can anyone have an implant?

Not automatically. Bone volume, gum health and general medical history all matter, which is why the assessment comes before any recommendation.

How long does a dental implant last?

An implant that has healed into healthy bone and is kept clean can last many years, often decades. The crown on top may need replacing sooner than the implant itself, and gum health around the implant is the biggest factor in how long it lasts.

What affects the cost of an implant?

The number of implants, whether extra bone is needed before one can be placed, and what is fitted on top - a single crown, a bridge or a denture. You receive the cost of each stage once the assessment has shown what your case needs.
