Kids Dentistry

Children's dentistry in Vellimadukunnu, Kozhikode

A separate, colourful treatment area and a deliberately unhurried approach. A child's first dental memory shapes the next thirty years of visits, so we take our time getting it right.

When this treatment is usually needed

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth being examined. None of them is a diagnosis on its own — several different problems can produce the same symptom.

  • A first dental visit, from around age two
  • Visible dark spots or holes in a child's teeth
  • A child complaining of toothache or avoiding one side
  • Thumb-sucking or tongue thrust that has not stopped
  • Adult teeth coming through behind the baby teeth

How we do it here

The specifics that shape your visit, rather than a generic description of the procedure.

  • Dedicated child-friendly room, away from the main clinic
  • Tell–show–do method, with nothing done by surprise
  • Sealants and fluoride to prevent cavities before they start
  • Habit correction for thumb-sucking, tongue thrust and more

How the visit usually goes

Every step is explained before it happens, so nothing arrives as a surprise.

  1. 1
    A look around first

Children see the room and the chair before anything happens. Nothing is done by surprise.

  2. 2
    Tell, show, do

Each instrument is explained and demonstrated before it is used.

  3. 3
    Examination

A gentle check of the teeth and bite, at the child's pace.

  4. 4
    Prevention

Sealants and fluoride where appropriate, to prevent cavities before they start.

This page describes a dental procedure in general terms. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan, and outcomes vary from person to person. What is right for you is decided after a clinical examination at the clinic. See our terms and medical disclaimer.

After your treatment

General aftercare. The instructions you are given at the clinic, for your own mouth, come first.

  • After a filling with local anaesthetic, watch that your child does not chew or suck the numb lip or cheek until the feeling returns.
  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste - a smear for under-threes, a pea-sized amount after that.
  • Help with brushing until about seven or eight. Younger children cannot yet clean every tooth properly.
  • Keep sugary drinks and snacks to mealtimes rather than spread through the day.
  • Do not put a child to bed with a bottle of milk, juice or sweetened drink.

Questions we are actually asked

Do you treat children?

Yes, from around two years old, in a separate child-friendly room away from the main clinic. We use the tell–show–do method so nothing happens by surprise.

When should a child first see a dentist?

Around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing, is what paediatric guidelines recommend. The aim of a first visit is mostly to make the place feel familiar rather than to carry out treatment.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes. Please do — for a first visit especially, a parent in the room usually makes things easier for everyone.

Are milk teeth worth filling if they will fall out anyway?

Usually, yes. The back milk teeth stay until about ten to twelve years old. Decay in them causes real pain and infection, and losing them early can let the neighbouring teeth drift and crowd the adult teeth coming through.
